EASTERN OBOLO: THE LIFEBLOOD OF AKWA IBOM STATE’S OIL PRODUCTION, YET A REGION SHROUDED IN DARKNESS, WATER SCARCITY AND INADEQUATE DIGITAL SKILLS CENTRES.

Since its inception as an independent Local Government Area, Eastern Obolo has continued to be the major contributor to the oil production capacity of Akwa Ibom State. Yet, for over eight years and counting, the residents of Eastern Obolo LGA have been languishing in perpetual darkness, devoid and deprived of the most basic social amenity – electricity. This paradox is all the more galling considering the region’s significant contribution to Akwa Ibom state’s oil production, accounting for a whopping 55%. It’s a classic case of THE GOOSE THAT LAYS THE GOLDEN EGGS BEING LEFT TO WITHER AWAY IN NEGLECT.

It becomes a serious concern to the youths and elders of Eastern Obolo LGA as we cannot continue to struggle without essential amenities in the area. The lack of electricity has brought economic activities to a grinding halt, leaving the locals in a state of limbo. We therefore suggest that Eastern Obolo LGA should be connected to the national grid like counterpart LGAs in Akwa Ibom State.

The government of Akwa Ibom state cannot continue to reap the benefits of Eastern Obolo’s oil wealth without investing in the region’s infrastructure. It’s high time the authorities PUT THEIR MONEY WHERE THEIR MOUTH IS and take concrete steps to address this egregious oversight. The people of Eastern Obolo deserve better than to be left IN THE DARK AGES while their region’s resources are exploited for the benefit of others.

It is important to address this energy deficit and parasitic relationship and implement sustainable solutions to ensure the region’s inhabitants have access to reliable electricity – the life wire of economic activities. By doing so, we can mitigate the adverse effects of photonic deprivation and foster economic prosperity in Eastern Obolo.

Water is seen as a useful prerequisite for good living. In Eastern Obolo LGA there are no good water sources. In this age and coupled with her enormous resources, it is abysmal to know that the people of Eastern Obolo still depend on water from small ponds for their daily activities. This is exasperating considering that this water cannot be clean for drinking consequent upon the heavy oil exploration and exploitation activities in the area.

Taking into account the relevance of Information and Communication Training (ICT) in today’s global market, the youths of Eastern Obolo have been undone by the government of the state and the managements of the oil companies operating in the area. Where youths are not part of development plan, the future becomes darker. There is no sufficient engagement of the youths, hence, no future for the area with respect to human capital development. In the Local Government Area, there is no functional Information and Communication Training (ICT) centre, to train the teeming youths in digital skills that are highly sought globally.

What a state of life, for a place where golden resources are tapped daily!

Considering that these digital skills are necessary for the continued operations and profitability of the oil companies in the area, and the willingness of the youths who are ready to be trained and empowered, we call on the companies to set up digital skills Centres across Eastern Obolo LGA.

This message is from the SAVE A SOUL CAMPAIGN FROM THE CONCERN YOUTHS OF EASTERN OBOLO, and we are calling on NNPC/MPN, STERLING GLOBAL and other companies that operate within our territory to do the needful as PART of their Social Cooperate Responsibilities.
